A Glimpse into Our Journey
A visual record of the people, projects, events, and community efforts helping build a stronger Bequia.
Water tanks
Bequia has no running water so each household must collect their own from rainwater, haul water from a local well, or purchase water. Action Bequia received a grant in 2022 to purchase and install water tanks for the neediest families on Bequia. To date over 300 tanks have been installed!
Children and the environment
Our Environmental and Youth Development program teaches school children about the importance of preserving Bequia’s natural resources. Initiatives include: Our Green Grenadines Educational Video starring local school children, Phil D. Whale sculptures that encourage recycling; documentaries filmed by young students about plastic pollution; and Youth Environmental Awards recognizing environmental youth leaders.
Recycling and litter reduction
Action Bequia’s largest initiative involves litter reduction and recycling. Two hundred and forty blue and green bins are placed around the island to collect trash, plastic, and metal drink containers. Recyclable items are sorted, washed, and transported to a recycling company on St. Vincent. We collaborate with a local block builder to use crushed glass in his brick manufacturing process, and our crushed glass is also being used in the construction of driveways and patios.
Beach clean ups
Action Bequia hosts regular beach clean ups where volunteers meet to rid our beaches of litter left by beachgoers and pollution that washes ashore such as plastic bottles and fishing nets. Youth groups, locals, and expats work together to collect dozens of bags of garbage and leave our beaches beautiful for all to enjoy.
Protecting Coral Reefs
In cooperation with local dive shops, Action Bequia helps to fund projects that protect Bequia’s coral reefs. Moorings have been placed in six dive spots to protect the coral from anchor damage and there is an ongoing reef re-seeding project will help to repopulate the reef at Devil’s table.
Princess Margaret Trail
In 2014, work commenced to develop a safe and attractive trail that begins at the end of the Belmont Walkway and stretches to Lower Bay all the way along the waterfront. Today, this trail helps the daily commute of countless workers and introduces visitors to the beautiful natural environment of Bequia.
Youth Sports
Action Bequia supports youth development by helping to fund initiatives such as the Junior Sailing Academy and sporting events through the local schools and communities.
Harbor beautification
In 2013, Action Bequia took on a project to beautify the harbor area and make it safer for pedestrians. Storm drains were refurbished and cleaned dail,, planters installed, and sidewalks covering drains were repaved.
